We are pleased to reveal a new family of graphics for the Hawkeye Marching Band! We worked closely with the Iowa Athletics licensing office and Rickabaugh Graphics to create new Marching Herky logos for the Hawkeye Marching Band, as well as the Iowa Alumni Marching Band.
Marching Herky is an entity woven throughout the history of the Hawkeye Marching Band. Herky the Hawk was introduced to Hawkeye Fans as the official mascot of the University of Iowa in the 1950s, and since the early 1970s, the bird has been depicted as a marching Hawkeye in graphics and illustrations, on band uniforms, and even as part of the "Herky on Parade" campaign to raise funds for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. The original Marching Herky was derived from Dick Spencer's mid-century drawings of Herky the Hawk, and over time, the style has evolved to reflect contemporary trends in animation. Historically, Marching Herky always wears the current band's uniform. Scroll through the gallery of images to see how Marching Herky has manifested throughout the years.
Marching Herky Through the Years
Retro Marching Herky
The new collection of Marching Herky graphics honors our past with a special "Retro" Marching Herky logo, designed to resemble the Hawkeye Marching Band's first uniform in the post-military band era. This logo is intended for use whenever the HMB is honoring our legacy of more than 140 years. There are versions that may be used for both the Hawkeye Marching Band and the Iowa Alumni Marching Band.
Modern Marching Herky
We have also created a new set of modern Marching Herky logos to match the Iowa Athletics Herky graphics, in celebration of the band in the present. In these graphics, Herky is wearing the current HMB uniform. The logos will be updated to reflect future HMB uniforms when the time comes. There are multiple versions to allow for use in a variety of settings.
Fossil Herky
In addition to the "Retro" Marching Herky Alumni Band graphic, we also created a new collection of "Fossil" Marching Herky logos. We drew inspiration from the illustration below, as well as the nickname the Iowa Alumni Marching Band uses proudly.
Celebrating 50 Years of the Iowa Alumni Marching Band
The Iowa Alumni Marching Band was founded in 1973 by the band's 7th director, Tom Davis. For decades, the Alumni Band has supported the HMB and given great performances each year for Homecoming. We are thrilled to release this special edition Marching Herky in honor of the Alumni Band's 50th Anniversary! This mark will be used as the official logo for the Alumni Band for Homecoming 2023.
