Christian Frankl wanted to be a Big 10 drum major for as long as he could remember, and this spring, his dream came true. While studying abroad in Scotland, Frankl spent time out on the grassy hills of Edinburgh practicing his mace routines in preparation to fly back to Iowa City and audition for the desired position.

Tyler Strickland will graduate having conducted the Hawkeye Marching Band on some of the biggest stages: Kinnick Stadium, a Big Ten Championship game, and the Citrus Bowl.

The Hawkeye Marching Band was one of two areas to exceed 180 gifts during the University of Iowa's 24-hour online giving day in 2021. Its members are ready to inspire more participation during this spring's event.

This year’s Band Extravaganza, the Hawkeye Marching Band’s annual show, will be held in Xtream Arena and feature three University of Iowa Bands, along with the introduction of a guest band.

This Fall, come to the Voxman Music Building for BAND 141, a look at the Hawkeye Marching Band. Director Eric Bush donated a significant collection of materials from the Band’s history including photographs, drill charts, papers, scrapbooks, uniform pieces, audio and video recordings, and other memorabilia to the Rita Benton Music Library in 2020.

BAND 141 is an exhibit that encapsulates the Hawkeye Marching Band’s history and traditions through their 141 years on campus. It is available to visit in the Voxman Music Building during its open hours.

College football sounded different last season. Kinnick Stadium was quiet. This year, the music is back. The Hawkeye Marching Band is back after a year away in 2020. ”I cannot describe how much last year really hurt,” senior sousaphone player Reese Thornburg said. “It’s gonna be so incredible to be back in the stadium.”

When piccolo player Kelly Enstrom died this past fall, college friends rallied to raise funds in her honor.
